Australia’s First Digital Air Traffic Control Tower to Launch at Western Sydney International Airport
Australia is set to enter a new era of aviation technology with the upcoming launch of the nation’s first fully digital air traffic control tower at Western Sydney International Airport (WSI), scheduled to commence operations in 2026. This groundbreaking project will make WSI the first Australian airport to operate without a traditional physical control tower, instead relying on state-of-the-art digital systems to manage air traffic safely and efficiently.
Revolutionizing Air Traffic Control with Digital Technology
The new digital air traffic control system, known as the Digital Air Services (DAS) system, represents a major leap forward in aviation safety and operational efficiency. Unlike traditional towers where controllers rely on direct visual observation through windows, the DAS system will employ over 20 high-resolution cameras equipped with advanced night vision and infrared capabilities. These cameras will capture a 360-degree view of the airport environment, day and night, allowing controllers to monitor the airspace and ground operations remotely from a dedicated control center located at Eastern Creek.
Airservices Australia, in partnership with CDC and Frequentis Australasia, is spearheading the implementation of this cutting-edge technology. The collaboration ensures the system incorporates internationally validated digital technologies and scalable solutions designed for the future evolution of air traffic management.

Enhancing Safety and Efficiency at WSI
The DAS system offers enhanced capabilities such as real-time object tracking, image enhancement, and infrared night vision, ensuring air traffic controllers have superior situational awareness regardless of weather or lighting conditions. This translates to safer aircraft movements on the ground and in the vicinity of the airport.
Moreover, the digital tower supports 24/7 airport operations without the restrictions of night curfews, positioning Western Sydney International Airport as a truly round-the-clock gateway for passengers and cargo. The digital tower is also designed to integrate with future airspace innovations, including the management of drone traffic and low-altitude airspace coordination, making it a forward-thinking solution ready for the aviation demands of tomorrow.
A Global Benchmark in Aviation Technology
Experts from Australian Flying and international aviation media have hailed the WSI digital tower project as world-class and highly scalable. By adopting proven international digital tower technology and leveraging partnerships with leading vendors, WSI is set to become a showcase for modern airport operations.
This initiative places Western Sydney International Airport at the forefront of digital transformation in aviation, promising to deliver safer, more efficient, and more flexible air traffic management services when it opens in 2026.
